water-bearer and her fish

by Olivia Weinkein

she dipped her toes into
stagnant water taunting and
teasing the fish who lived
there. threw him a line several
times to try and catch him and
take him anywhere. but he being
a proud fish and all ducked from
her shiny hook. and so one day
she went away, deciding to never
give him a second look. but alas,
absense does indeed make hearts
grow fonder while dwelling in
waters too murky to see through.
and one day her face caught his
mind and to think of her, was all
he could do now. so he waited
patiently for her to come back,
maybe she would just get bored
one day, or slip off track and
stumble upon his tiny pond and
throw him a line once again. it
wasn't that he didn't want to
dry-dock with her, he just wanted
her to learn to swim with him.

eventually, they did meet again
and the fish confessed all that
he felt, but she was cursing
everything under the sun for the
cards that had now been delt.
little did he know that she was
once and for all leaving his pond
for good, her hook packed away. she
couldn't understand why he was so
surprised, he couldn't understand
why she wouldn't stay. and slowly
his little pond begins to dry up
and he floats in the same spot day
after day. but don't worry too much
about the little fish, his tears will
be enough to keep him alive when she
leaves and takes the rest of
his water away.

he is like a 'fish out of water' without me...
