Perder La Vista

by Kitty Ness

Over swells from New Mexico
a clay bowl full of mandarins
stretches and yawns.
The Pacific Ocean takes up its
nightly burden, defeated again.

Unified for a brief moment
in a dreamer's game
the two rivals meet
and threaten across a
battlefield of peaks and valleys.

There is a place I
can go where the
center of the battlefield
is still.

Here for a brief moment,
arms outstretched,
fingers pointing to dueling
mountaintops,

I can command
the uncommanded.
