On Growing Up

by Leah Laiben

the time has come for
little boys to grow up;
for little girls to wear makeup
and to pack away our matchbox cars
and our dollies and we can't play
ghosts in the graveyard anymore
because we know we'll be in the
graveyard soon enough as it is.
And women will find men and men
will find girls
and girls will be girls and find men
because that's the way of the world
and these are the grown up games
we will play everyday because our
dollies are on a shelf collecting dust
and our matchbox cars are buried somewhere
in the dirt of our youth. So let's
dust our boots and polish our nails
and get a move on.
