this is not a poem

by Daryl Fein

Fade to black,
revered lovers break away,
I lie here in silence,
tending breath and beat,
motionless,
her grey form appears from the black,
I gaze stone faced at her smoothly curving back,
hurt, thoughts of dispair stab my every nerve,
what have I done?
knowing she will never again look at me
with the smile of a million piercing angel kisses,
feeling dismissed and ready for the purge,
I lie here in silence,
alone,
a thousand scenarios and second guesses dilute the time,
abandoned,
recourse is no longer an option,
and life continues to punish those who love without regress,
as the days pass,
the numbness fades away,
leaving only a frail ego wrapped in pain and confusion,
I have no direction,
I have no sense of the world around me,
but I have to move on, she gave me no other choice.
