Reflections on Society

by Cathlyn Cartier

What has happened to the world today?
What is wrong with our society?

Honor, morals, respect, integrity –
replaced by greed, selfishness and pride.

No longer can we be troubled to help a needy stranger.
"I’ll be late…"
"It’s too hot…"
"It just isn’t safe…"

But when we turn our backs on friends and family,
what reflection is that?

Or are we too blinded by our own selfish desires to see someone else’s need?

A father refusing to support his own children,
a mother leaving her children alone,
a child crying out in pain and hunger,
yet nothing is every done.
No one intervenes.

As the coroner leaves the scene the news scavengers convene.
Neighbors relate the horror that they knew was going on,
yet they chose to remain silent until now.

GUILTY! One and ALL!

Guilty for the death of an innocent!
Guilty for pain and suffering to others!
Guilty of Neglect!

Guilty of being one more…

"Problem of society".
