Streets of Despair

by John Harder

She spends her days
wandering the streets
No friends
Not even an acquaintance
Trying desperately in vain
to escape the hurt
and fill the emptiness
she's always felt inside
She buys a soda at Joe's variety
the cashier smiles and asks
paper or plastic?
'What's she smiling about'
she thought to herself as she left
before collecting her 15 cents
only to walk the all too familiar streets
of downtown nowhere
Sick of the same old life
she sets foot in a small chapel
on the corner of main and 4th street
not able to explain why she did
even if there was someone to explain it to
She hopes sometimes that it would all end
Tears start to flow
Her attempts to hold them back
have failed miserably
She tells a god who she's not sure is real
how miserable life was
and asks why He made her
(if He truly did)
When the last tears have dried to her face
she left
Not with all the answers
or even any
but she felt better
and she couldn't explain it
to the friends she doesn't have
