Jet Pack

by Amy Niggel

Just hold on you told me
let go of all your reservations
and hold on
you said you would carry me off
into the night
like some sci-fi hero with a jetpack strapped to him,
and I believed you
God help me I believed you
and I held on for all I was worth
I let go of everything else and held on to you
but somewhere along the lines we ran out of fuel
and I fell head long back to the earth,
and I lay there
trying to refill my lungs with the precious air of this world
time to let go of the dreams darling
time to let go of childish ideas
no jetpack to hold us up
we are back on solid ground,
it was a nice ride but it is over now,
thank you for the ride
but life must go on now
good bye darling.
