Halloween Whole Year 'Round

by Anne Engelen

Halloween whole year ‘round

No kidding...that’s what I’ve found

In the hearts of people I know

Trying to look different

By putting on masks hiding their hearts

Hurt prevention is what they say

Yet all they do is scare others away

Spooky business that’s what it is

Being cared for?

They’re not taking that risk

Trick or Treat? What do you think?

Trick of course, not allowing love to defeat

Tricking themselves is what they master well

Left behind empty, trapped in a cold shell

Their body, a temple of doom

Their heart, a cold casket in that tomb

Halloween in the heart ..year after year

It's a mortal fear I don't want to be near

excellent poetic depiction of an obscure phenomena, that of dealing with pain by masking ourselves and it produces what? more pain, thanks Anne for a haunting (get it) poem some writer by the name of payne wrote that much of negative response to life is what tempts us to mask and negative responses is all about pain management when we learn a positive response to pain we can move forward in a way that is helpful to ourselves, thanks again for a really excellent poem Carl

It's hard to take off a mask that you are familiar with. Thanks for sharing.
