Melissa Etheridge Should Get a Cat by Meredith C Hartwelland i was thinking i should
write a poem
because the rain patters
on my window like
the stones you throw to wake me,
and i want to let you in
but my mother would be angry
about the hour and your
wet shoes.
so i curl on my bed and
think about the day
because that is what happens
when there is a cat
asleep in the blankets.
and i lay my head
on her overfed stomach
while she kneads her acupuncture
into my neck
because she cannot get enough
of my touch.
and she stretches
long and limber
and she purrs
like snoring, restful sleep,
moving air quickly,
chilling the shiny, spotted nose
that touches my face
in kitten kisses.
and i think
this is how every day should end
soft warmth in my bed,
a little pussy,
and a cold one to
wet the lips. 10/25/2002 Posted on 10/28/2002 Copyright © 2025 Meredith C Hartwell

Posted by Ken Harnisch on 11/09/02 at 07:53 AM loved the title and, here, with my very furry Maine Coon perched in my lap, laughed uproariously at the last few lines! PS: keep the poem the way it is...it is superb! |
