an ode to ordinary

by Quinn Vokes

I thought today was an ordinary day
But it wasn't

When I heard the news
I didn't cry

Because I didn't know you
Like they knew you

I didn't even really know
What you looked like

I thought today was an ordinary day
But whispers were heard down the hall

Tears of anguish and confusion
Could be seen on their faces

And I just kept on walking
Ignoring the fear I saw in their eyes

I thought today was an ordinary day
What a fucking ordinary day it was

I'm sorry I didn't take the time
To reflect

But I didn't have anything to reflect upon

I could kill myself

Because I considered today
An ordinary day

Author's Note: this was written about a fellow student who died last year. it was actually the poem that started my whole fiasco with writing all my thoughts down and turning them into poetry. so for that, i thank him.
