Stinky Dog

by Charles J Hannan

Trying to sleep
Early morning sounds familiar
But wait
No dog barking at squirrels
Could it be
what usually happens
On a rainy day
When the ground is ripe
For digging?
I don't even have to call
Her name
Just look around
Hearing silence
She has done it again
Under the fence
Is her usual route
As I go to the front door
I hear a jingle of a tag
Thank God it was that easy
But now I have, on my hands
A stinky, wet black lab
Who is getting the best of me
