Change of Season

by Chris D Lavigne

As winter changes to spring
Blades of grass pierce through the remaining white quillwork
Snowmelt leads to saturation
Where roots take to the water
like I once took to you
and drink deeply
And I realize...of all that returns this season
You can't return to me

As spring changes to summer
The heat doesn't inspire sweat in quite the same way
as whispering your name
or feeling your touch
Where I used to catch the sun upon my tongue
and then show you how it tastes
And midsummer night rains
never brought me down
Remembering how sweet the drops
upon your lips
which I kissed
to take in your breath...and feel that which was inside you
And I realize...of all that returns this season
You can't return to me

As summer changes to autumn
Folliage changes to match the golden fire of your hair
Cool, crisp evenings bring forth gentle breezes
which work their way through my hair...like your fingerd used to
causing me to reach behind
expecting to touch your hand
Where full moon skies project crosses through my window panes
bringing peaceful dreams
as if I were in your arms again
And I realize...of all that returns this season
You can't return to me

Autumn changes to winter
Where the last leaf falls
and raindrops become snowflakes
blanketing the earth and keeping it from harm
...as you once did for me
But December mornings aren't quite the same
when I can't see your breath dancing with mine
And I am now able to walk on water
crossing the lake
to the house where we usaed to live
Which I won't go to anymore
because I can't walk there with you
...
Some say that time can take the world and change it at will
the world, which seemed so small compared to the universe which I saw inside your eyes
But time cannot explain why it took you away from me
...It expects me to forget
So I'm left here waiting to learn how to forget
...When with every change of season...

What will always return...are my memories of you

So sad....well-written though. Great imagery.
