Dear Journal

by Ashley Beaudoin

Dear Journal,
My eyes have seen the truth today.
My ears have heard enough.
These people don’t want me to be here.
They think I am a hog.
I wasn’t supposed to me here.
They didn’t listen to the truth.
Hate for me is all they have.
The color of my skin is all that they see.
They don’t see what type of person I really am.
I’m not a killer.
I shouldn’t be here.
These hands did not kill those men.
Why can’t they listen to what I have to say?
My eyes have seen the truth today.
My ears have heard enough.
People here don’t care about what is really right or what is wrong.
To see an innocent man die is all they want.
Strap me to that chair and pull that switch, but I will not die a hog.
I will die knowing I am a man that died because I was at the wrong place, with the wrong people at the wrong time.
I am innocent and I know I am right.
These eyes have seen the truth.
These ears have heard enough.
Just leave me be.
I am sorry for the trouble.

Author's Note: This was written as a class assignment for a college writing class. We were reading a book and had to do a kind of reaction so I wrote it as a journal/poetry type writing.
