behind the belly dancer

by Mainon A Schwartz

she lifted
her arms
and rolled her hips
out of sync with the music

but no one minded
they were all glued
to her midsection

entranced by the
undulations
of flesh

the note of
exotic promises
in the music
made every tilt of her head
seem like a discovery

but when the music
stopped
there was no life
left in her muscles

and for all the transparency
of the veils she wore

no one could see through
her.

Wonderfully written... makes the reader think beyond the desire.
