(st.i.ll dre.am.ing) laughter

by Richard Paez

Laugh
With the realization
That this is just another
Distraction

What are you dear?
Hallucination-mirage?
Blurred-vision-revelation?
An epiphany...
That drum-beat pulls me in like a tired fish
No more ocean for me just hooks and nylon
Just like my father
The fisherman caught in his own net

Laugh
With the realization
That this is just another
Insufficient metaphor

Knock-knock
Can you hear me now?
I’d like to be like you
Going where the tide goes
Free, as free as a mindless creature can be
Parting waves like dried and peeling scabs
And when the waves come in
The tide rolls
There i’ll be
Battered senseless
A dead man breathing
Gasping and thrashing

Where are you dear?

Can you hear me?

Laugh
With the realization
That this is just another
Pitiful attempt
To reach
The surface
To breathe
Again

I enjoyed reading this aloud in a charming-insulring manner. I really liked the 4th stanza. A momentary praise that buries the one being praised. Wicked.
