Ravage and Rebirth

by Cathlyn Cartier

Current rushing, flooding,
overwhelming everything in its path,
drowning and destroying that which is slow or unyielding,
covering it over with a layer of silty mud.

The water recedes and vanishes,
leaving the world blanketed in somber drabness.

A solitary figure struggles through the muck,
grey dingy and sodden,
barely distinguishable from the coverings of nature,
searching for remnants of a life past, of a world swept away.

The sun returns, shining brightly upon the earth,
nurturing and renewing with its warmth and brilliance.

Rays reflecting and refracting off of shattered windowpanes.
The lone sojourner pauses; peering through the broken glass,
at the dreams and memories left behind,
and then passes on, out of sight,
knowing that when next he travels down this path,
a different world will greet him.

Exquistite in both concept and execution. So much to think about that I will probably have to re-read to get it all. Great verse.
