Stolen chess pieces are the only good chess pieces
The pawns that don't match or belong to the same set
On a park table weathered by wind and water
The dark ones different shades of brown and black
Or the light ones made of cream and aged yellow
Plastic queens from coffee shop games or school bins
Heavy kings secretly snatched by a mansion dweller
Together in the scaled-down table top of a world
Performing like actors the moves and tricks
Held by the hands that collected them with careful interest
Mismatching them until he found the perfect fit
The pawns dance with fever together
