Noises in the Night (rondeau)

by David R Spellman

Who is it there that raps my door
Shuffles back over creaky floor
Why do you hassle me this night
Causing noise which would give me fright
What darkened task have you in store?

My cupboard’s bare, food stocks are poor
Have no money here as before
If these you seek, my home is light
Who is it there?

Intent to shake me to the core,
Carry me over yonder shore?
Tho’ darkness has relieved my sight
These sounds do tempt and urge my flight
Tell me wind that it’s you once more!
Who is it there?
