May I Have This Dance?

by Chris D Lavigne

Excuse me
but may I have this dance
and no, I won't even ask your name
You remind me of someone
so it's really kind of irrelevant
I hope you won't be offended
for when we dance...
I won't be looking into your eyes
I'll be somewhere else while I'm with you
as I always was with her
as she was with me
We weren't meant to be together
but while we were
we were where we wanted to be if we could
...
When we danced...
I was with her in the a small strand of pine trees in the middle of a field behind an old cemetary that hardly anyone knew existed
where soft breezes blew, with the warm summer sun overhead and I'll always remember the way her hair tried to cover her face, but it could never cover her smile
...
When we danced...
She was with me at the beach where summer night rains would accentuate the scent of night-blooming jasmine in the air, waiting for enough rain to come down where the drops would start to roll down her face until they met her lips and she knew I would kiss her until we both no longer cared that it was raining
...
So I hope you don't mind
I just want this one dance tonight
to remember her
And I mean no disrespect
...for not even asking your name
