I Know I Need to Write a Poem...(adult)

by Amanda Conlogue

I know this as I sit and eat
A cappuccino heath Blizzard
Listen to Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation
Feel the sweat congeal on my back
In the too-cool, air-conditioned Dairy Queen
I know I need to write a poem
I know it’s mid-July and humid
Like a proof box, bread rising, I know
My hair’s frizzy, my body’s limp and
Sonic Youth has never sounded better
It’s a summertime freedom song
It’s a great big fuck you
And I want to scream it
Like the feedback on the record
I know I need to write a poem
I know it’s too hot to cuddle after sex
I know if I were there with you
We’d peel out sticky skin apart to flop
On the ends of the mattress where
We slip farther away from each other
I know if I were to roll over
Your eyes would be closed, your chest
Rising and falling in rapid rhythm
Your skin, damp and hot
A reflection of the July humidity
I know all this as I know
I need to write a poem.

I myself can think of worse reasons to want to write a poem...but no worse month, save August
