pretend away the pain

by Emily G Myers

he has a quiet
that makes him irresistible
crouching carefully
he pretends away the pain
seeing only beauty
he speaks so softly
when the sun is coming through
and blankets are pulled around his face
after the dark and still of night
upon waking
his words wrap around me
covering me in a warmth that is him
and his hands find me waiting
I know he can feel my breathing quicken
anticipating his touch
like the winter’s snow
that pushes its way through
breaking apart all fear
pretending away the pain
and in the moments we’re together
we share every secret of the universe
calling out to deities forgotten
totally and purposely in vain
our love easily covering our faults
and if we crouch deeply enough
we can hide from who we’ve been
and every self-consciousness disappears
when his hands find me waiting
and the rhythm of his breathing
proves to me that all I ever needed to survive this life
is him
