I Caution You

by Ken Harnisch

I caution you against telling me you love me.
It is not that the words would be so onerous
To hear as they would go unacknowledged.
No, it is not that they are unwelcome. Honestly,
I have forgotten what it is to love with such abandon
As is in your soul every time you speak with me.
Still, I marvel I have the power to light such candles
In the hearts of others when it seems my own
Has long forgotten how to start a fire.
