Listen well

by Gabrielle L Gervais

I put my ear to your head
and I hear the muffled music
of your mind
the collection of unmatched socks
chipped ceilings
and charred fire
Warm ashes are drowning you
and I dig.
Dig until I reach the bottom
And you aren't there.

I put my ear to your cheek
and I hear the muffled thoughts
of your heart.
razor blades
curses
bleeding fingertips
and broken knuckles
You are covered in dirt and
I dig for you.

I put my ear to your chest
and I barely make out the muffled achings
of your soul
desire
desperation
and a rainforest of sand
and pine needles.
You are covered in paper cuts
And I dig from myself
and suffocate you
in as much love
as I can muster.
so that some day we can breathe

together
