Is life too short?

by Phil P Robson

I lay this paper, no pressure at all
Don’t try to think, just leave it alone
Now think of a word, equality
The one I expected to hear
No time for philosophy, life is too short
Work out myself by the end of the day
While a family toils all night for $4 pay

And don’t make it rhyme, for no purpose at all
A distortion of views for an aesthetic smile
Borrowed from corporate marketing
Living in denial
Enjoy yourself, life is too short
And we’ll change nothing with more concern
Enjoying consumption, the lesson to learn

I said all I can, changed nothing at all
I lay in my grave, no smile on my lips
Denouncing my opinion
Worthless as yours
I let it go because life is too short
I lay as a whore, to your whim I’m resigned
Your portfolio opinions, joint ventures in mind.

100’s of countries, no voice at all
bent to ones needs, away from their own
to sell out or starve
the choice of the poor
and whereof I speak, life is too short
I’d crucify myself to increase your lot
But I know that I can’ and I know I can’t not.

To stick with this pattern, or just let it fall?
As illiterate, confused, random thoughts
Simile, couplets, metaphor
I tried all I know
This poetic licence falls just too short
To explain that our proud surplus
Is impossible without this shameful deficit
