The Last Broadcast

by Chris D Lavigne

(This piece is dedicated to the West Palm Beach Poetry Slam - R.I.P. 7/31/02)

So here we are
at the last broadcast
Like my former classical music station
times will change
even though we may not need another dance station
and things will fade
get lost
but be remembered
Welcome to the last broadcast
a last chance to have judgement passed upon you
As you release your screams within
or your points of view
or your personal agendas
But at least you've spoken
before your voices were made silent
By those who judge the status quo
and have declared this poetry slam is apparently uncool
and must go
So those who came
to forget all else
to get their weekly dose of a reality check
Must now continue their migration
to find a place of contentment and relaxation
to hear what people have written themselves
without script writers with intent to please the masses
But speak with words that ring true...
To themselves
So remember all that you've heard tonight
before it slowly fades into the past

So a toast to Richard Green
As here we all are
to enjoy
