Upon Driving in a Monsoon

by Britt Zimmerman

The monsoon is stirring
winds are whipping through
a thick brown sky
I am driving home from work
pink floyd wailing quietly
through my fm radio
birds are losing control
scattered through the currents
untimely deaths
I counted four in about a ten mile stretch
poor helpless things
one after the other
taken in the underdrafts
smack into the sides of speeding cars
people laugh
natural human reaction
to uncomfortable situations
I just count
watching their feathers swirl
the only things left
feeling the impact somewhere
deep in my heart
perhaps
from another lifetime...
