Laurels and Lilacs

by Jane E Pearce

Remember laurels and lilacs
when time sharpens its claws,

and dusks visit earlier
to ease skeletal flaws.

Smile at pearls and opals-
gems that necklaced the days

when tomorrow meant forever,
and love was for always.

Remember laurels and lilacs,
and appetites to whet,

flowers pressed in a book
that emanate fragrance yet,

words long ago spoken,
a smile that never palls,

bathe in the shower of memories
before the last dusk falls.
