Malachy's Prophecy (The Last Popes) by David R SpellmanFrom obscurity and then lost
into ancient archives lay his list
discovered much later under stale
dust piles of four hundred dark
by-gone years still proceeding
to indicate that our time may hold
the last days of papal monarchs.
A valued human trait, skepticism
leads to questioning such things
as the validity of prophecies but
so too, isn't wisdom as important
or is this just to be brushed aside
as another doubtful and fanciful
prognostication we don't believe
pointing to these days or perhaps
to our fate provides one more clue.
Of course, only time itself will
show us the truths and whether
we had been wise to take heed.
Note: It is believed by some that St. Malachy O’Morgair, Archbishop of Armagh, Ireland in 1139 was granted a vision of all the Popes of the future. His list lay in the Vatican archives until discovered in 1590. According to this list, the current pope, John Paul II is the 3rd to last remaining pope.

Posted by Richard Paez on 11/23/02 at 05:57 PM Very interesting information on St. Malachy and a fascinating question to ponder on human nature, superbly posed and phrased. This sent me scampering off to www.newadvent.org to do some research. Thanks for sharing this David, as always, your keen eye shines light for the rest of us to see a little more of the world with. |
