For Bodies to Stop Falling by Mainon A SchwartzAnd the switch is thrown
But where I expected light
Something else blinds me
(It's darkness)
And unrecognized bodies
Hurtle towards me
(Do I duck, or do I
Spread my arms to welcome them?)
You come in designer
Packages: studious redhead whose
Freckles outnumber mine, then
Blond surfer with turquoise eyes,
Then dark-skinned and serious, with
A face that radiates security.
And I can't remember your names;
And I don't know what you see in me;
But you call my name
And swear amazing things
And to my horror
My delight
My fault
I remember this feeling
I recall the motions, and the
Delicate placement of the words.
I can imagine the flecks of light
Speckling your irises--and
Then I'm falling
Deep, deep into the pupil
Which contracts around me, pulling
And dilates at the same time
To let me in.
And so I am the pupil, the student,
Drowning in the subject of your eyes.
If only I knew what you saw in me.
If only I knew your name.
