Butterfly Wings

by Charles M Harrison

I saw a butterfly today
a spot of color in a world of gray.
I thought I would try to keep it here
to have and always hold near.
But though I tried it would not stay
it fluttered and flew away.
I watched it weave across the sky
and wished I had wings on which to fly.
Wings of hope and wings of light
wings of strength and wings of might.
Wings of beautiful and delicate grace
that would take me to a better place.
But my wish did not come true
and I am still away from you.
In my world of gray I stay
for I can not fly away.
I am left to dream my dreams
of happy things and butterfly wings.
Knowing there is no truth in them
that I will not see the butterfly again.

Awww...rather a sad ending. Your words had me captured totally. I was flying with the butterfly for a little while. Lovely little poem:)
