Gaze

by Richard Vince

You won't remember me now...
And if you saw me, I wouldn't
Expect you to recognise me.
I'd just be some random person
Sitting opposite you again.

Somehow I think I would
Know you if I saw you again,
Or at least if I saw your eyes.

They still haunt me sometimes.

As far as I can recall,
They are the only eyes that
Have ever reached into
My ribcage and tried to
Extract my still beating heart.

I remember the way you looked
Back at me too. The way
You didn't turn away and
Look out of the window
As I expected you to;
Instead, you looked right back
At me, like your gaze
And mine were designed to
Fit together perfectly.

You won't remember my eyes
Though. By now, you'll have
Seen countless pairs that are
Far more memorable than mine.

Perhaps you don't even remember
The journey you were making
Across the border to Glasgow
Or beyond. After all, it was
A good few years ago now, and
Pale grey spring days tend
To blend together in the memory.

However, I doubt I will ever
Forget those soul melting eyes
That illuminated my life
For but a few short hours.
