now you see me, now you don't

by Rachelle Howe

"pick a color."

my eyes danced
the dance of lovers
the dance of serenity
the dance of death

my lips
mouthed words
but said nothing
they were like
some puppet
dangling
from strings that
were cut

snip.

and i tumbled into myself
and fell
fell
fell deeper into my head
and i was swallowed
and i obeyed...

but did i really?

"pick a color."

my soul swelled and
entered in again again again
and i fell
fell fell
into the trance
the trance of lovers
the trance of new beginnings
i submitted
i bowed.

but i couldn't relent,
you see,
i couldn't let them
have control over me
and i picked a color
red
yellow
blue
purple
they were desperate to
keep up

"you're disappearing,..."
she said, in awe
and I did.
