Possession

by Jayme L Helmick

Breathlessly I await the morn
Gripped with terror, somehow reborn
Mercilessly it chases me
The hounds of hell behind me
I know not from where it comes,
Another life, another me;
It's always there, watching, waiting,
For me to remember the past.
No escape, I try to flee
It won't let go, it feeds on me
Desperately I search for the core-
To find resemblance... life no more.
I run from that which holds me tight
Shame feasting on my soul a blight
Try to forgive my tortured frame
Absolvence gone and forget my name.
Too many years I tried to hide
And thought that I escaped my pride
When always treads yet closer still
To shadowed truth of hidden will.
Now I know from where it comes,
Another life, another me;
It's always been there, watching, waiting,
For the past to remember me.
