The Tears Behind My Mask

by Jersey D Gibson

All my life
I've hid behind a wall,
with only two gaps
for my eyes to see.
The only thing you see of me
behind my mask.

But now recently,
my mask has failed.
Despite best intentions,
the mask doesn't work.

The mask doesn't work,
when I am smiling.
The mask doesn't work,
when I am laughing.
The mask doesn't work,
when I am happy.
The mask doesn't work,
when I am crying.

My tears make the glue
that holds my mask,
come undone.
The mask doesn't work when there's nothing to hide.
