Hidden Lives of Ladybugs

by D. Xavier Bari

"They bite, you know."
-- countless wounded

Drawn to her absolutely,
an adoring child
protectively doting
over a Mid-Summer's
flame-red ladybug.

Charmingly alluring,
with mysterious grace,
she weaved quickly
an intricate pattern
that tickled my fingertips.

I did not understand
what moved her to action,
the heartsoul hidden away
underneath her glossy sheen,
but still I was captivated.

Hopelessly enamored
with her intoxicating dance—
I would possess this beauty,
make her my own to admire,
without asking why.

A selfish droog, I caught her,
set her in a glass jar—
where she died
—silently but surely—
right before my eyes.

Oh, this very nearly breaks my heart from the truth of death in a jar..admired, coveted, protected, adored, bragged about...but dead all the same in the end.
