Failing

by Richard Vince

Maybe one day you'll believe me
When I tell you you're beautiful,
Or maybe I'll never convince you.
Either way, you are beautiful,
And that won't stop being true
No matter how much you disagree.

There seems to be a lot
We disagree about anyway, so
Why not add another thing?

When you look in the mirror
I would love you to see
What I see when I look at you,
Especially when you beam at
Thoughts of drummers killed
In freak gardening accidents,
And that security guard at Tesco.

If you could at least let me
Think you're wonderful,
It would be a start.
After all, I don't stay up
Talking for six and a half hours
With just anyone.

You see, I always knew
You were special, ever since
We first exchanged words.

Although we've known one another
For what seems like a long time,
It feels as though I am only
Just beginning to let you know
How wonderful I think you are,
Even though several poems
Before this one have been
Attempts at expressing it.

I will probably spend the rest
Of my life failing to do so.
