Bon Voyage, Sir Walter Raleigh

by David R Spellman

For too many years now
your course has been set,
the invasion of my veins
and expansion into my lungs
with your rancid stench,
pervading my whole being,
exuding the remnants
of each and every
last breath I inhaled.

I despise that moment
I first laid my hands along
your sleek slenderness,
sparking your tip aglow
and drawing you into me;
leaving me only these
bits of dark, damaged
and bloodied lungs.
Cursing this addiction I
am trying to overcome,
fighting the temptation to
run and join another pack
of your favorite brand.
Ha!... as if I could run.

I hope I live long
enough to break this
damned habit. At last
viewing life’s magic
as it unfolds its wonder
in smokeless mirrors!
