A Rumour's Life

by Anne Engelen

Frankly I don't care
about what people say or think
I look at my friend
smile and wink
He looks at me and shares my view
Time again to start a rumour or two

He and me, just friends?
According to rumour's rules
that can never be
A woman and a man...mmmmmmm
automatically in bed that story ends

It's fun to see a rumour grow
like a little seed of grass
instantly ready to be mown
Together we enjoy the show
of how people create stories
about things they don't know

Starting as a whisper
it goes from ear to ear
Barely heard, but felt so clear

Little by little gets added
to the rumour's truth
The bearer of the news
is ready to shoot
and spread the unbelieveable
but mallicious stories
heard from Jane, who
heard it from Beth, who
heard it from and from and from...
all trustworthy sources, no worries

The rumour grows and flourish
nourished by people's frustrations and thoughts
very creative and unique
To them I'm just a freak

Sometimes I wish
I lived my rumour's life
Far much more exciting
than being just a wife
