by Quinlan L Gibson

I have loved, and been.
Cursed and hated.
I have been adored.
I have been degraded.
I've been beated with fists.
I have been cut by words.
I have learned to listen,
and demand to be heard.
I have laughed from my heart.
I have cried from my soul.
I have held the reigns firm.
I've been out of control.
I have suffered loss.
I have created life.
I've been solely for sex.
I have been the wife.
I have spoken the truth.
I have blatantly lied.
I have been the leader.
I have stepped to the side.
I have conquered odds.
I have risen above.
I've jumped right in.
I have needed a shove.
I continue on.
In my own way.
These haves made me,
who I am today.

(Inspired rendition of my cousin Susan Quinlan Kasten's piece.)

I like how this piece speaks to the multi-layered self, but doesn't seem to judge.
