My Wonderful Husband Jack

by Melina Raven Maness Diebold

I remember the day
When Jack and I met
It was the 13th of May
I'll never forget

Seven months later we wed
and pledged our vows
We slept in the same bed
and bought our own house

The next thing I know
I am with child
Jack's abuse adds to my woes
But it's only mild

One day during my 34th week
I say I haven't seen in him a while
Suddenly I cheek to cheek
With the cold ceramic tile

My little fall makes me go
Into premature labor
Jacks says I'm a ho
since the baby looks like our neighbor

After Katie's second birthday bash
Jack arrives with Jack Daniels on his breath
I soon meet his fist and fall with a crash
I know this is my death

Sadly, I live
"I'm sorry" he cries
Gladly, I forgive
buying another pack of lies

I became addicted to Maybelline
Because I was constantly hiding a bruise
But even through make-up my wounds are seen
it's a battle I continue to lose

Then one morning, on the 13th of May
I told him Katie and were leaving
"No! You're gonna stay!"
he exclaimed, unbelieving

"Loving Daughter, Mother, Wife"
On my tombstone was engraved
Since he took my life
Maybe now he'll behave
