Earthbound Star

by Richard Vince

It would seem that my heart
Has run away to find you,
And left me here alone.

Perhaps it was merely
A momentary lapse in concentration
On my part since, no matter
What some may have you believe,
Falling instantly in love
With people I've never met before
Is not normal behaviour for me.

That is, however,
What appears to have happened,
And all I can do is
Write about it, and wonder
What you are feeling now.

While I pursue elusive sleep
Under a starless sky,
The midday Sun will be
Illuminating the world around you,
But probably failing to outshine
Your smile, that I hope one day
To see, or at least to hear.

I hope I have not taken
Your smile away from you.
Please do not let me
Deny you joy and happiness;
Do not let me be the clouds
Obscuring the celestial radiance
That the world should never
Be without.

Instead, let me play the Moon
To your Sun, reflecting
Your light to the parts of the world
That live in its absence.
Then maybe, one day, we will
Dance together in one orbit,
One single pattern for eternity
Into which we perfectly fit.
