Why I am becoming a Catholic

by Amy Niggel

Because I cried the first time
I took communion,
Because I cried on Easter
when I took communion
Because I long to feel
whole again
Because I miss
the pomp and circumstance that is the church
Because I have gone
More faithfully to mass than any other religious event
Because I realize
how long I have been away
Because I know now
what G_d's love feels like
Because I see a world around me
that I no longer know
Because I have a family
that I can no longer help on my own
Because I can no longer deny
that I need a source of strength
Because I forgot what it felt like
to know that I have faith.
Because I see now
more clearly than ever
Because of Jessica
and Nickolas
and Q
and Ila
and myself
Because I cried when I took communion
and I realized they were tears of joy
and of regret
and of a homecoming too long overdue.

Hi Amy, Just read your poem, it's lovely. I'm not Catholic, I go to the Church of the Nazarene. I used to go to a Baptist church years ago. I'm still learning about it. It's just up the street from me, I can walk to it. It's like a small country church in the city. Nothing fancy, just right. Jean
