Breath of life ..or brief encounter by Anne Howe
"Taunt me not" said death to life
"I, your mirror image stand at the edge
The dictator of will and won't
Have and have not
On the very brink of 'to be or not to be'
"I am the fine tuner of your rhythmic clock
The heart which within your chest beats its roll of time
The air which by many millions is shared
Breathes life into your human bellows"
"Taunt me not" said death to life
"Life and death predict each other's fate
Death comes from the condition of being born
It is not a penalty
But no longer can you experience the unfailing love of those around you
Live and savour neither the past nor the future
But the present"
"Taunt me not" said death to life
"This moment is the only one we really have
....Memories?
.... Dreams?......Perhaps
But in reality this moment is all we have"
"I will not taunt you" said life to death
"I breathe in knowing I am breathing in
And breathe out knowing I am breathing out
I shall happily remember the past
And anticipate the future
But death, I will not taunt you
And I shall live life to the full
In the moment
with grateful thanks for the life of a friend who is recovering from major heart surgery
