Don't Look Now

by Kristine Briese

Don't look now, but here I am.
Right here - in your shadow.
You could not guess what I've become.
You could not guess what agony drives me.
The agony in your eyes.
Yesterday's face is warm on my mind.
You were my passion put to use,
And you were clear to me.
But now, you fit no pattern I can find,
And I, too, am untranslateable.
My nature - my soul - is wasted on you,
But still I follow you.
Take my eyes - I'll still watch you.
Take my voice - I'll call your name.
But you're not looking back at me, and
You forget my name.
It makes me wonder:
Is it still you behind those eyes?
Until you answer me, nothing is over.
Think now. What will you say?
