Virginia

by Betania Tesch

Subtitled: Where I am not: a rambling, lilting piece
I am not in Virgina,
nor have I ever been,
but he is
though I wish he were not.
But where I am not
and where he is
always seem to coincide so well.
He is everywhere
that I am not
because places have names
and there are little lines
drawn around them
that make up the boundaries
between he and I.
It is a constant,
a given mathematical principle
(where + he = there - me)/those two precious occasions
I saw him say my name.
I have never been to Virginia
but I'd like to change that.
A simple testimonial, to the southern (mid-atlantic?) boy.

Author's Note: mmm I've been to Virginia since I wrote this poem and it was lovely. Not the place itself so much as the company...
