Look a Little Closer

by Holly H Dunne

Watch this happy girl
As she dances through life
A dimple in her cheek
A sparkle in her eye
Look a little closer
That sparkle is a teardrop
Look at her makeup
Painted on her smiling face
Her powder perfect snow white cheeks
Look a little closer
That powder is streaked with tears.
Look how her delicate butterfly bones
outline her slight figure
And yet she says she eats what she likes
Look a little closer
Those butterfly bones jutting through her skin
Whisper the truth.
Look at her arms
Always dressed in pretty rainbows of bracelets
that glimmer and rattle as she hugs everyone
Look a little closer
Those bracelt covered arms are slashed from wrist to elbow.
She goes shopping with her mother every Monday
Look a little closer
They don't return laden with shopping bags
Instead, she clutches an appointment card for her next therapy session.
Look how she embraces each new day, how she loves life
Loves to dance with Morning until it turns to Night
Look a little closer
You'll see the scars left
From where they undid the damamge of 44 pills.
