King and Jester

by Adrian Calhoun

Tell me honestly,
was it worth it,
to be on top of the pile?
If given the chance to do it all again,
would you do the same?

You are king of the world,
at least your world anyway.
No loyal subjects to serve you,
with all those friends you forgot,
betrayed, or left behind,
it is lonely at the top.

That is the price you pay,
for using people.
Chewing them up,
then spitting them out,
like the gristle from your meat.

You are the jester,
of your own court.
