My Butterfly

by Anne Engelen

I captured a little butterfly
and put it in a shiny jar
So I could admire it whenever I was near
It was the most beautiful little thing
I had ever seen

But every time I looked at it
There came rolling that tiny tear
My thoughts kept crossing my mind
I tried and searched
But the reason for that tiny tear
I could not find

My beautiful little butterfly
Did not radiate the same beauty as before
And the longer I stared at it
It only lost more

The next time I went to admire my little treasure
I found my butterfly covered with a leaf
It gave me a bit of pleasure
I could see the beauty again

Though it made me sad
Now my butterfly was dead
