Through your smile softly seething

by Devon E Mattys

Through your smile softly seething,
Faint in form the tonic breathing,
From within restore you silence
With the hint of recognition
To that quiet admonition
Being Fury’s hate and violence
Toward her suitor’s dull seduction
Till the day when all obstruction
Crumbles at the feet of giants.

Lay me down before the matter
Burns you and the ashes scatter
To the winds, all four directions,
Pleasing someone known for guessing,
Acting as the evening blessing,
Splendid for our plain selections--
Dream of someone’s even dining
In the House of God, reclining,
With the marble art collections.

Draw me closer, ever nearer;
Our reflections in the mirror
Tend to bend in some distortion
Of the truth for all to notice--
Side effects of chewing lotus,
Sucking on the pinker portion--
Like an ocean seen through glasses
By the perfect-sighted masses
In some sort of odd contortion.

So you and I will never be
The lovers others want to see,
But in your smile there resides
A sort of comfort I should know
As through the years I come and go
And always find that it provides
The simple care I seem to need,
Or often it my needs exceed,
A certain love that ne’er subsides.
