Plague

by Richard Vince

Maybe if I close my eyes
For long enough, I might
Disappear and never bother
You again, so you can
Get on with your life and
Forget I was ever here.

But you and I know
You're not that fortunate.
Like the plague, I hang around
Until I've killed most
Of the people around me.

I suppose I had hoped
That you would avoid being
Another of my victims.

Alas you have not escaped
My evil talons, and soon
You will feel the pain
Of my hands closing
Involuntarily around you,
Choking all the air out of you,
Making you wish
You had never set eyes on me.

Much as I long to break
This pattern, it is just
A reflex with which
I am cursed.

If it is any consolation,
I will spend the rest of my life
Hating myself, and wishing
I could have avoided
All the pain I caused you.

And your name will join the list
Of memories with which I can
Beat myself to death.

someday, someone will go through YOU. and then things will change. and you'll be able to grasp that part of you that you never thought existed. *hugs*
